Late 19th-Early 20th Century:  Impressionists

The Impressionists created a dramatic color transition with the use of bright, intense yellows, oranges, blues, greens violets, and avoiding black.  Their side-by-side complimentary colors contrasted noticeably with the monochromatic, somber hues of earlier times.  Impressionists saw color everywhere, in everything.  Even the atmosphere is defined and painted as violet.  They did more plein air painting because of improved oil paint tubes and longer lasting watercolors.  Some called the 1890s "The Yellow Decade" because so much yellow was used.

A generous use of yellow is illustrated in "Yellow Vibrations" (oil & cold wax, 22x30).
