As more and more hues and shades were synthesized chemically, an unlimited variety of ready-made colors became available.  (Consider, for example, that there at least 15 different yellows now, from cadmium pale yellow light to yellow iron-oxide. )

An "anything goes" attitude prevails, in color, subject matter, style, and materials, as suggested in Whimsy #1 (acrylic, 8x10).
